Artificial Casings
We stock 5 layer thermoshrinkable plastic casings made from PA/PE (Polyamide/Polyethylene) multilayer film, a trusted casing for bologna, luncheon meat, and other large cooked products. These casings provide strong oxygen, water vapor, and UV barrier properties, along with flexibility, thermoshrinkability, and good dimensional stability. Available in nominal diameters from 30 mm through 160 mm in both non shirred and shirred formats.

We stock 5-layer thermoshrinkable plastic casings manufactured from PA/PE (Polyamide/Polyethylene) multilayer film. The 5-layer structure provides very good water vapor, oxygen, and UV barrier properties and can help protect product aroma, freshness, and shelf life, depending on the product formulation, processing conditions, packaging, and storage conditions.
These casings are thermoshrinkable. They shrink tightly around the product during thermal processing, producing an unwrinkled, smooth, professional surface appearance. Manufactured using virgin PA/PE polymers suitable for food contact applications.
A shirred stick is a pre shirred length of casing compressed into a compact stick, allowing the casing to feed continuously onto the stuffing horn during production.
✅ This list is not exhaustive. Plastic casings are suitable for a wide range of cooked and processed products that do not require smoke permeability. Contact us at 201-939-3335 to confirm the right casing for your specific product.

Recommended overfilling is approximately 3%–5% for all diameters.
Soaking and preparation requirements can vary by casing size, format, and manufacturer. The following are general guidelines. Always follow the preparation instructions supplied with the specific casing.
Processing conditions must be adjusted for the specific product formulation, casing diameter, equipment, and desired finished product. Follow your established validated process and the casing manufacturer's recommendations.
| Step | Chamber Temp | Humidity | Duration / Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Step 1 | 55°C | 100% | 15 minutes |
| Step 2 | 65°C | 100% | 20 minutes |
| Step 3 | 70°C | 100% | 30 minutes or to 60°C core temperature |
| Step 4 | 75–90°C | 100% | 10–15 minutes or to 72°C core temperature |
| Cool immediately | Cold water / shower | N/A | Until product core drops below 30°C |
⚠️ After steam cooking, sausage sticks must be cooled immediately by running water, shower, or programmable sprinklers. Do not place hot sticks directly into the cold room. This will cause wrinkling of the casing surface.
Storage and conditioning requirements may vary by casing format. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the specific product.
